The
powerful Ferrari 512 S had a one season lifespan (1970) characterised by the
appearance in endurance races of sports cars with a power of 500 HP. and more.
This vehicle made its first appearance in November 1969 and regularly competed
in the 1970 World Championship of Makes. After a promising start (it is victoriuous
in the Sebring 12 Hours race driven by the team Giunti-Vaccarella-Andretti)
the 512 S was not capable of withstanding the extremely strong Porsche 910 team,
and for this reason Ferrari decided to abandon this car at the end of 1970 and
to concentrate on the 312 PB, the model which will allow them to win the world
championship in 1972. However, in order to favour clients with 512 vehicles
Ferrari built the 512 M variant which came out in the Zeltweg 1000 km. and differed
from the S model for the completely new bodywork, for the more powerful braking
system, for the lighter chassis, and for the increased power (approx. 600 HP.).
This vehicle won the 1970 Kyalami 9 Hours race (with Ickx and Giunti) and the
Shell Cup (with Merzario). It came in third in the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours race
(with Posey-Adamowiez). An interesting and winning version of the 512M was built
by the American Roger Penske Racing.
